The Research Journey
The Research Journey ยท 6 Stages 1. Problem& Question 2. LiteratureReview 3. TheoryFramework 4. Methods& Design 5. DataCollect & Analyse 6. Writing& Defence Each module in Learn walks you through one or more of these stages
Learning Modules

Ten structured modules to take you from research basics to publishable scholarship. Each module includes simplified and academic explanations, Tanzanian/African examples, common mistakes, practice activities, mini-quizzes, and recommended readings.

Practice Zone

Apply what you have learned. Draft your research problem, choose your methodology, and test your knowledge with feedback-driven quizzes.

Problem Statement Builder

A strong problem statement has five clear components. Fill each step, then generate a structured draft you can copy into your proposal.

1 Broad Context

The wider field, sector, or environment. e.g., "The digital transformation of media in East Africa..."

2 Specific Issue

Narrow to the specific problem or tension. e.g., "...has raised concerns about misinformation."

3 Evidence the Problem Exists

A study, statistic, or report. e.g., "A 2024 TCRA survey found 62% encounter misinformation weekly."

4 Knowledge Gap

What is NOT yet known. e.g., "...little is known about how Tanzanian newsrooms verify online sources."

5 Significance & Purpose

Why it matters and what your study will do. e.g., "This study examines verification practices in three newsrooms to inform editorial training."

Your Draft Problem Statement

Methodology Selector

Answer 4 questions about your research, and we will recommend a methodology approach. Always discuss with your supervisor before deciding.

Master Research Quiz

15 randomised questions sampling all 10 modules. Get instant feedback. Aim for 12/15 or higher.

Reference Library

Deep-dive references: 24 theoretical frameworks, peer-reviewed journals, methodology guides, and writing references.

Discover Theories Beyond This Library

The 24 frameworks above are curated for PR, CSR, Strategic Communication, and Media Studies. If you need a theory outside this scope — from sociology, organisational studies, or another field — search the wider scholarly web. Each result opens the search in a new tab.

Choosing Your Research Paradigm

Methodology must flow from your worldview (ontology and epistemology), research questions, and the nature of the phenomenon.

DimensionQualitativeQuantitativeMixed Methods
ParadigmInterpretivismPositivismPragmatism
PurposeUnderstand meaningsMeasure & generaliseExplain & explore
DataWords, imagesNumbersBoth
SamplePurposive, smallRandom, largeBoth
AnalysisThematic, discourseStatisticalIntegration

Key principle: Methodology must be coherent โ€” ontology aligns with epistemology, which aligns with methods and analysis. Scrutinised in vivas.

Research Ethics

PrincipleMeaningPractice
Informed ConsentVoluntary, fully informedPlain-language sheets; consent forms
ConfidentialityData cannot trace to individualsPseudonyms; secure storage
BeneficenceDo good, avoid harmRisk assessment; debriefing
JusticeFair distributionInclusive sampling

In Tanzania, obtain ethics approval from your university committee. For non-Tanzanian researchers, apply for a COSTECH research permit.

A research proposal demonstrates feasibility and significance. Most universities require it to pass departmental review.

1. Title & Abstract

Title: identifies variables, population, context.

Abstract (200โ€“300 words): problem, objectives, framework, methodology, expected contribution. Write last.

2. Background & Problem Statement

Establish context, identify gap, justify significance. The single most critical section.

3. Objectives & Questions

3โ€“5 specific, achievable objectives with action verbs. Each objective maps to a question.

4. Literature Review

Synthesise thematically. Include foundational + recent sources. Include African scholarship.

5. Theoretical Framework

Identify the theory underpinning your study. Explain how it guides your interpretation.

6. Methodology
  • Design, philosophy, study area
  • Population, sampling
  • Data collection instruments
  • Data analysis procedures
  • Validity/reliability or trustworthiness
  • Ethical considerations
7. Work Plan & References

Gantt chart with phases, budget if applicable, APA 7th references.

Most East African universities follow a five-chapter master's thesis structure.

Chapter 1: Introduction
  • 1.1 Background; 1.2 Problem Statement; 1.3 Objectives
  • 1.4 Questions/Hypotheses; 1.5 Significance
  • 1.6 Scope; 1.7 Limitations; 1.8 Key Terms
Chapter 2: Literature Review
  • Conceptual definitions
  • Theoretical framework
  • Empirical literature (thematic)
  • Conceptual framework
  • Research gap
Chapter 3: Methodology
  • Philosophy, design, study area
  • Population, sampling
  • Data collection, validity/reliability
  • Data analysis, ethics
Chapter 4: Findings & Discussion

Present results by objective. For each: data โ†’ interpret โ†’ link to literature โ†’ link to theory.

Chapter 5: Conclusions & Recommendations
  • Summary of findings, conclusions
  • Contribution to knowledge
  • Recommendations for practice, policy, research
